![]() ![]() ![]() Where did you get the idea of Maybelline being a runaway?Īt first the book was mostly going to be about beauty pageants, but when I started researching them, I didn’t find much that I liked. It wasn’t true to Maybelline’s character. ![]() My husband finally asked what was going on, and I told him, “I’m a teenage runaway right now.” As it turned out, I cut out a lot of the swearing. I went through a period of swearing a lot. It was kind of liberating being a teen for a while, though. I got so immersed in writing the book that I didn’t even think of the audience. How is writing for teens different from writing for middle-schoolers? When my agent, Jodi Reamer, read it, she called me immediately and said, “This isn’t the book you signed the contract for!” Then I went into a panic, thinking, “Oh, no! Am I going to get fired?” Luckily, my editors, Arthur Levine and Cheryl Klein, loved the book. I had signed a contract for a middle-school book, Charm School Drop-Out, about a girl whose mother tries to turn her into a charm-school queen, but the book I ended up writing turned out to be something very different. ![]()

The Mistborn trilogy's also worth reading if you have time. I don't see an order as necessary for reading them, although I'd probably rather build up from good to better, personally, so I'd say start with Elantris and move to Warbreaker. But both are still good entertainment regardless: Warbreaker is just more complex and more fulfilling. So if you're looking for a richer story and characters, Warbreaker is better. ![]() (In fact Elantris is a first book, and Warbreaker's a much more recent one.) The characters in Elantris are more unidimensional, the magical system is somewhat less complex (perhaps disputably), and so on. If I were reading the two books without knowing anything about the actual chronology of publication, I would have immediately said Elantris felt much more like a first book than Warbreaker did. I'm hardly the most well-read sci-fi/fantasy reader, but Elantris feels less realistic to me. ![]() ![]() One of those intense scenes involve our protagonist, Merci, being beat. Not so long ago, this particular quote about aging existed on the Internet primarily as a wise saying attributed to “Anonymous” or “ Unknown.” For example, motivational speaker Bill Benjamin included it as such on his list of “Favorite Quotes & Thoughts” as far back as 2008.
